Class Descriptions

Jennifer offers the following classes at local yarn shops.

Cableology I

This is a Basic Cables class. We will take cable knitting from the ground up, learning cabling with knit stitches. The class includes a headband pattern and a hefty handout with information on definition, history, classifications, characteristics, gauge, interpretation of charts, symbols and written directions, and so much more! There are even directions for practice swatches to prepare for the next level. If you’ve never tried cables, or if you’ve just not been satisfied with your cabling results, join us for this class and you’ll feel more confident with this technique.

Materials

  • Approx 65 yds worsted weight yarn, preferably solid color
  • US size 8 (5 mm) needles—dpn, 16” circular, or short straights work best
  • Cable needle
  • US size H (5 mm) crochet needle
  • Darning needle

    Cableology II

This is an Intermediate Cables class. We will build on the knowledge gained in the beginner class by introducing twists, traveling cables, and cables using increases and decreases. We will also learn about three-part cables, cables with odd numbered total stitches and even cabling without a cable needle. The class includes a headband pattern and helpful class handout with practice swatches for moving on up to advanced level cabling. If you want to go further with your cables, you’ll enjoy this class.

    Materials

    • Approx 80 yds worsted weight yarn
    • US size 8 (6 mm) needles—dpn
    • Cable needles (2)
    • US size H (5 mm) crochet needle
    • Darning needle

    Cableology III

Do you love cables so much that you want to design your own? You’re ready for Advanced Cables, integrating cables into the knitted fabric with formulas for deciphering the math involved. This class will equip you to put cables into one of three basic hat design templates in order to produce your own unique design. We will use stitch dictionaries and knitter’s graph paper to plan the project with any weight yarn you choose.

    Materials:

    • Yarn of your choice, approx 100 yds
    • Appropriate needle size (check your reference), dpn & 16” circular
    • Cable needle
    • Stitch Marker
    • Calculator
    • Pencils with erasers

Machine Felting Your Knitting & Crocheting

If you’ve always wanted to shrink your work and have it turn out lovely, take this class. We will discuss the pitfalls of felting, what fibers work best, what materials to use, why you should block, etc., and we will knit a nifty little purse that you can go straight home and throw in the washer to try out your new expertise.

    Materials

    • Approx 200 yds wool worsted weight yarn
    • US size 10 (6 mm) needles (16” circular & dpn)
    • Darning needle

    Top-Down Sweaters

Would you like to make sweaters with no seams to sew when you’re done? How about making a sweater and deciding how long the sleeves and body should be before it’s too late to fix them? This is the class to learn how to start with the collar and knit down to the hem and cuffs, making your sleeves just as long as you want, and even turning that cropped sweater into a tunic, if you choose. The class includes steps for mini top-down sweater, and then if you want to make a full-sized sweater, follow the charts also included for several sizes.

    Materials

    • Sport, DK, or worsted weight yarn
    • Appropriate size needles (dpn, 2 circulars or 1 long circular)
    • Stitch markers
    • Darning needle
    • Stitch holders (2) or scrap yarn

    Toe-Up, Short-Row Heel Socks

Do you love sock knitting, but are ready to advance? How would you like to be able to make your sock cuffs as long as you wish, with no worries about whether your yarn will hold out? Wouldn’t you love to be able to try on your socks as you go and make sure they will fit? What about eliminating the dreaded Kitchener graft at the end? If this all sounds right up your alley, then you are ready to go toe-up. Also, if you’ve wondered about short rows but were afraid they’d be too hard, then you are in the right place. We will knit tiny socks beginning at the toe and go on up to an easy short-row heel with no wraps or yarn-overs. Then we’ll finish with the cuff, and when you’re done, there’s no grafting left to do! Class handout includes directions for many sizes of basic toe-up full-sized socks.

    Materials

    • Sock yarn (use your leftover stash!)—75-150 yds
